UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin reportedly chose not to attend the 2026 FIFA World Cup final as a deliberate gesture of disapproval towards FIFA. According to British media reports, the Slovenian official stayed away from the showpiece event to underline his growing frustration with football’s global governing body.

Relations between UEFA and FIFA have become increasingly strained in recent months, with several controversial decisions creating friction between the two organisations. The World Cup final boycott is being viewed as the clearest public indication yet of the widening divide.
One of the biggest flashpoints came during the tournament when FIFA overturned the suspension of United States striker Folarin Balogun before a World Cup match against Belgium. The decision followed a public request from US President Donald Trump for FIFA president Gianni Infantino to review the player’s red card.
UEFA strongly criticised the decision, describing it as “unprecedented, incomprehensible and unjustifiable.” European football’s governing body argued that yielding to what it viewed as political pressure crossed a line and undermined the integrity of the disciplinary process.
Further disagreements emerged over FIFA’s handling of Somali referee Omar Artan, who was unable to enter the United States because of immigration restrictions. In response, UEFA appointed Artan to officiate next month’s UEFA Super Cup, a move widely interpreted as a show of support for the official.
Concerns also arose over the treatment of Iran during the tournament. Iranian coach Amir Ghalenoei described his team as “the most oppressed” at the World Cup, while comments from US Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin after Iran’s elimination added to the controversy surrounding the competition.
Beyond governance issues, UEFA has also resisted adopting several of FIFA’s new tournament innovations. These include mandatory hydration breaks, the “mistaken identity” VAR protocol and disciplinary measures for players who cover their mouths while speaking to opponents. Ceferin had also criticised the expanded 48-team World Cup format before the tournament began, questioning the competitiveness of several matches.

Ticket pricing has become another point of disagreement between the organisations. UEFA has pledged to maintain affordable fan first ticket categories for Euro 2028 across the United Kingdom and Ireland, promising that a significant proportion of tickets will remain low-priced while rejecting dynamic pricing.
Although Ceferin attended the World Cup’s opening match in Mexico City, his absence from the final has fuelled further speculation about the deteriorating relationship between UEFA and FIFA.
