Ruben Amorim has no words after his AC Milan side were beaten 2-0 by Ferencvaros to leave their Europa League campaign hanging by a thread.

Milan have won only one of their four matches in the competition and sit 28th in the league phase. The defeat came just days after they beat Inter in Serie A, where they have lost only once in 10 games.

Lenny Joseph scored twice for Ferencvaros, who have won all their matches in Europe so far. Milan failed to recover even after substitute Bamidele Yusuf was sent off in the 77th minute.

“When you play for Milan, you have a responsibility,” Amorim said. “You can’t go out there like this. We’re not ready to compete on both fronts in Serie A and Europe. We need to work on our approach to matches.

“There’s nothing I can say, we had to win. It was an important match. I can’t say anything to defend the team.”

Amorim made six changes to the side that beat Inter before bringing on three players at half-time, including Christian Pulisic. But Milan struggled to respond after Joseph scored twice early in the second half.

The first goal came after a mistake by reserve goalkeeper Lorenzo Torriani. Joseph then scored again on the counterattack as Milan pushed for an equaliser.

Amorim said he had to consider whether his own preparation had contributed to the defeat.

“Maybe I did something wrong in the last few days,” he said. “Last year the team had similar problems and today we weren’t ready, we didn’t have the attitude to try to come back at all costs if behind. Tonight we have no excuses.”

The former Manchester United manager added: “They were better technically, tactically, and especially mentally, they deserved to win. We were not prepared to play professional football today.

“We need to look at ourselves and to be better.”
