Pochettino Says Tottenham Relegation Fight Is Painful To Watch

Former Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino says it is really sad to watch the club battle relegation.

Mauricio Pochettino has said that Tottenham Hotspur’s shocking battle against relegation is deeply painful for him to witness, with the former Spurs boss saying the current situation is difficult for everyone connected to the club to accept.

Tottenham currently sit 18th in the Premier League table on 34 points with only four matches remaining, leaving them firmly in the danger zone as they fight to avoid one of the most humiliating relegations in the club’s modern history.

Despite Roberto De Zerbi arriving earlier this month in a desperate attempt to rescue the campaign, Tottenham remain on the brink.

For Pochettino, the collapse is particularly emotional. The Argentine spent five memorable years in North London and transformed Tottenham into genuine top-four contenders, culminating in that famous run to the UEFA Champions League final in 2019. Even after his departure later that same year, his bond with the club and its supporters has clearly remained strong.

Speaking on The Overlap’s Stick to Football podcast, Pochettino did not hide his sadness at seeing his former side in such a desperate position. He admitted that Tottenham will always be an important chapter of his life and said it hurts to know how much the current turmoil is affecting both the fans and people behind the scenes.

“It is really sad,” Pochettino said. “I really love Tottenham, and it is always going to be an important part of my life. It is really sad because I know how the people are suffering, inside the club and also the fans. It is difficult to accept.”

There was at least a small glimmer of hope last weekend when Tottenham finally recorded their first Premier League win of 2026, edging past bottom club Wolves 1-0. However, the relief generated by that victory was quickly dampened as fellow strugglers West Ham also picked up three points, meaning Tottenham made no meaningful ground in the survival race.

Worse still, Tottenham’s injury crisis has become even more severe at the worst possible time. Influential playmaker Xavi Simons suffered a devastating ACL injury during the Wolves match, an issue expected to sideline him for months and potentially rule him out of the World Cup.

Dominic Solanke is also nursing a hamstring problem, further reducing De Zerbi’s already limited attacking options for the final run-in.
