Thomas Tuchel has encouraged Jude Bellingham to embrace his aggressive side, believing the England midfielder is at his best when he plays with greater intensity and emotion.
Bellingham was one of the central figures in England’s 3-2 Nations League defeat to Spain at Wembley, where his competitive nature was on show during a heated exchange with Real Madrid teammate Marc Cucurella.
The midfielder responded to the confrontation in the best possible way, setting up Anthony Gordon for England’s goal shortly afterwards.
Tuchel, who has previously challenged Bellingham over his emotional reactions on the pitch, now believes that side of his personality can be an important part of his game. “It’s better if he plays with a bit of rage. It’s what he does,” Tuchel said. “I think sometimes he is looking for these moments to get his fire going.”
The England boss suggested Bellingham’s competitive mentality does not change simply because he is facing players he knows from club football.
“He wants to win. He doesn’t know any teammates. He is still friends with them, but not for the 90 minutes,” Tuchel said. “It’s the only style he can play; that’s just his game.”
Bellingham is expected to retain his place when England travel to face Czechia on Tuesday as they look to respond to their defeat against Spain.
However, Tuchel admitted there are concerns over the midfielder’s workload after a demanding start to the season with Real Madrid. “We will need to check with the physios. We will not put Jude at risk,” he said.
