Harry Kane and Lamine Yamal delivered the kind of performances that make a Ballon d’Or debate even more interesting.
Both players scored in England’s 3-2 Nations League defeat to Spain, giving supporters another opportunity to compare two of the biggest names in world football.

But while the game produced plenty of talking points, it should not suddenly become the defining moment of the 2026 Ballon d’Or race. The award is about a player’s body of work across the season, not which contender happened to perform better in one high-profile international fixture.
Kane and Yamal shine in a five-goal thriller
Spain made the perfect start at Wembley when Yamal capitalised on a mistake from Marc Guéhi before calmly finishing his opportunity. The Barcelona youngster showed the composure and quality that have made him one of the most talked-about players in world football.
England responded through Anthony Gordon before Kane completed the turnaround before half-time. The Bayern Munich striker rose to meet Nico O’Reilly’s cross and headed England into a 2-1 lead.

Spain eventually turned the game around after Harry Kane missed a penalty, with Álex Baena equalising before setting up Mikel Oyarzabal for the winner..
The performances from Kane and Yamal will inevitably fuel another round of Ballon d’Or comparisons. However, there is a danger of allowing the popularity of this particular fixture to make it seem more important to the award than it actually is.

The Ballon d’Or is not a popularity contest
The Ballon d’Or has somehow in recent years, resembled a popularity contest, particularly when fan debates become dominated by social media, big games and viral moments. But that is not what the award is supposed to represent.
Its original purpose is to recognise the best individual player in the world over the course of a season. France Football’s criteria consider individual performances, collective achievements and trophies won during the defined reference period.
That distinction matters here. England vs Spain was a hugely popular fixture, and Kane and Yamal were two of its biggest attractions, but the game represents only one match. It cannot possibly represent the totality of what either player accomplished during the 2025/26 season.
The Nations League is an important international competition, but it is still only one part of the football calendar. More importantly for this particular debate, this England-Spain meeting falls outside the reference period for the 2026 Ballon d’Or. The award’s 2026 assessment period ran from August 3, 2025 to July 19, 2026.
That means performances from the new campaign cannot simply override what happened during the season being assessed. There is also a useful reminder from last season. Yamal’s performances against France generated plenty of Ballon d’Or discussion, but Spain subsequently lost the Nations League final to Portugal. That result did not, by itself, determine the Ballon d’Or.
