Mexx Meerdink scored twice as the Netherlands claimed their first win under Xavi Hernandez with a 2-1 victory over Serbia in Belgrade.
After making his managerial debut with a 1-1 draw against Germany three days earlier, Xavi saw his side take control early on, although Serbia threatened first through Sergej Milinkovic-Savic, whose angled effort went narrowly wide.
The Netherlands eventually broke the deadlock from the penalty spot after Aleksa Terzic was penalised for pushing Crysencio Summerville inside the box. Meerdink stepped up and calmly converted despite Vanja Milinkovic-Savic guessing correctly.
The visitors continued to create chances, with Denzel Dumfries denied by the Serbian goalkeeper, although their first-half display was dampened by Cody Gakpo being forced off with an injury.
Serbia responded immediately after the break. Substitute Luka Jovic capitalised on a loose ball in the Dutch box after Bart Verbruggen had made two quick saves, firing home to restore parity.
The Netherlands almost regained their advantage through Ruben van Bommel, whose effort clipped the post, while Tijjani Reijnders missed a good opportunity after finding space inside the area.
The pressure eventually paid off, however, as Meerdink scored his second of the night. The forward took Guus Til’s pass into his stride before producing a composed left-footed finish to put Xavi’s side back in front.

Serbia pushed for another equaliser and Jovic came close with a header that narrowly missed the far post, but the Netherlands held on for all three points.
The victory extends the Dutch’s unbeaten run in competitive matches to 18 games after 90 minutes, while Xavi begins his tenure with four points from his opening two Nations League fixtures.
