Andrea Pirlo is set to become Italy’s new head coach on a four-year contract after Pep Guardiola rejected the Italian Football Federation’s approach.
Andrea Pirlo is reportedly on the verge of becoming the new head coach of the Italy national team after the Italian Football Federation reached an agreement with the former midfielder on a four-year contract.
According to reports, Pirlo has emerged as Italy’s preferred choice after Pep Guardiola turned down the opportunity to lead the Azzurri following discussions with the federation.
Widely regarded as one of the greatest midfielders of his generation, Pirlo enjoyed a glittering playing career with Inter Milan, AC Milan and Juventus, while also helping Italy win the 2006 FIFA World Cup.
The 47-year-old is currently managing United FC in the UAE First Division League. His previous spell in Italian football came with Juventus, where he guided the club to both the Coppa Italia and the Italian Super Cup during the 2020/21 season.
Pirlo’s expected appointment comes shortly after reports confirmed Guardiola had rejected Italy’s proposal. The former Manchester City and Barcelona manager reportedly decided to extend his coaching break despite holding talks with the federation.
Italy also explored the possibility of appointing Brazil head coach Carlo Ancelotti, but the veteran manager is expected to remain with the South American nation through the 2028 Copa America and the 2030 FIFA World Cup.
The Azzurri have been searching for a new manager since Gennaro Gattuso stepped down in April following another disappointing period for the national team. Italy have now failed to qualify for three consecutive FIFA World Cups, highlighting the scale of the challenges facing the federation.
Pirlo’s arrival is expected to mark the beginning of a wider rebuilding process within Italian football. Alongside restoring the national team’s competitiveness, the federation is also aiming to improve youth development and strengthen the pathway for emerging talent as it looks to return Italy to the top level of international football.
