Chelsea have completed the signing of Pep Chavarría from Rayo Vallecano, with the Spanish left-back arriving as the club’s replacement for Marc Cucurella.
Chelsea have agreed to pay €19 million for the 28-year-old, with a further €2 million available in potential bonuses. The deal represents a significant reduction from Chavarría’s €50 million release clause and brings an end to negotiations that initially proved difficult between the two clubs.
Chelsea’s first offer of €15 million was rejected, but the two sides eventually reached an agreement that allows Chavarría to begin a new chapter at Stamford Bridge. He has signed a long-term contract and becomes another addition to Xabi Alonso’s evolving squad.

Chavarría arrives after an impressive campaign with Rayo Vallecano, where he made 44 appearances across all competitions last season. He featured 33 times in La Liga, scoring once and providing two assists, while also making three Copa del Rey appearances and eight outings in the Europa Conference League, where he contributed another assist.
His arrival gives Alonso another experienced option at left-back as Chelsea look to build greater depth across the squad. With Cucurella no longer part of the picture, Chavarría is expected to compete for an important role rather than simply serve as a squad player.
How Chavarría Fits Into Alonso’s Chelsea
Chavarría’s profile should make him an interesting fit for Alonso’s tactical approach. The Spaniard is comfortable operating as a traditional left-back but has also shown the ability to push higher up the pitch and contribute in possession.
That versatility could prove particularly useful for a Chelsea side expected to switch between different shapes during matches. Chavarría can provide width when the team builds up and attack from deeper positions, while his experience in Spanish football should help him adapt to Alonso’s demands.
His arrival also creates an intriguing battle with another new signing, Marco Palestra.

Palestra has traditionally operated on the right but impressed enormously when deployed at left-back during Chelsea’s pre-season victory over AC Milan. The Italy international’s attacking instincts, dribbling ability and versatility have already made him one of the more interesting additions to Alonso’s squad.
That could give Alonso two very different options on the left. Chavarría offers natural experience in the position, while Palestra provides a more attacking and unpredictable profile.
Rather than replacing Cucurella with a like-for-like option and closing the door on competition, Chelsea have potentially created another tactical decision for Alonso. If Chavarría settles quickly, he could become the natural first-choice left-back, but Palestra’s performances suggest he will not simply accept a backup role..
