This one smells like a pub fight

Tottenham have found Stamford Bridge a difficult place to visit for years. They return to west London on Saturday hoping to change that record, but it won’t be an easy feat.

Chelsea have won their last two Premier League matches, scoring seven goals and conceding just once. A 5-1 home victory over Bournemouth was followed by a 2-0 win at Everton last weekend, with Pedro Neto scoring both goals. Chelsea have climbed to fourth in the table and will be looking to make it three league wins in a row for the first time since February.

Tottenham, by contrast, have had a difficult start to the campaign. Roberto De Zerbi’s side finally recorded their first league victory of the season on Monday, beating Coventry City 3-1 at home. James Maddison opened the scoring, Omar Marmoush added a second and Ben Davies sealed the result in stoppage time.

The win lifted Spurs to 16th but there is plenty of work left to do. They have collected only six points from their first seven league matches and will need to build on the Coventry result if they are to move away from the bottom end of the table.

Chelsea will be aware that their opponents have the attacking players to cause problems. Maddison’s return to the starting line-up has given Spurs another creative option, and Mohammed Kudus and Dominic Solanke offer pace and movement in the final third. Marmoush also scored his first goal for the club against Coventry and will hope to build on that performance.

But the head-to-head record makes uncomfortable reading for Spurs. Chelsea have won their last six Premier League meetings with their London rivals and can set a new club record with another victory. Tottenham have also lost six consecutive league London derbies, a run they will be desperate to end.

Chelsea have lost only one of their last 16 Premier League London derbies at Stamford Bridge. Tottenham, meanwhile, have won just once in their last 36 league visits to the ground. Those numbers give the hosts a clear advantage, although a derby victory for Spurs would provide a major lift after their poor start.

Team News

Chelsea goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez is out after undergoing surgery on a fractured jaw sustained in the victory over Everton. Mike Penders is expected to start in his place. Reece James remains out following knee surgery, while Jamie Gittens is recovering from an ankle injury. Pep Chavarria is also unavailable, and Malo Gusto is a doubt after illness.

For Tottenham, Rodrigo Bentancur is suspended and will serve the second match of his three-game ban. Xavi Simons, Wilson Odobert, Lucas Bergvall and Savio remain out with injuries. Mykhailo Mudryk is also unavailable. Destiny Udogie is a doubt, while Pedro Porro could return after recovering from a hamstring problem. Omar Marmoush and Tosin Adarabioyo will also need to be assessed after picking up problems against Coventry.
