What the Spanish left-back Chavarria could bring to Xabi Alonso’s side if the move is completed.
Chelsea are still searching for defensive reinforcements and they have turned once again to Rayo Vallecano left-back Pep Chavarría.
Reports suggest the 28-year-old has already agreed personal terms with the Blues, although negotiations between the two clubs continue, with Rayo Vallecano holding out for a fee of around €25 million after Chelsea’s initial €15 million offer.
If the deal goes through, Chelsea will be signing one of La Liga’s most reliable full-backs. Chavarría may not possess the same profile as some of Europe’s elite attacking defenders, but his consistency, defensive awareness and composure in possession have made him one of the standout performers in his position over the past season.

A defender first and foremost
The biggest strength Chavarría would bring to Stamford Bridge is his defensive reliability. Throughout the 2025/26 campaign, he made 73 tackles and won 44 of them, giving him an impressive tackle success rate of 68.75%.
He also recorded 42 interceptions and 41 headed clearances, underlining his ability to read danger early and deal effectively with crosses and aerial threats.
For a Chelsea side that occasionally looked vulnerable in transition last season, those defensive qualities could prove invaluable. Alonso values defenders who are disciplined without the ball, and Chavarría appears to fit that profile perfectly.
He also attempted over 1,600 passes last season and successfully completed 1,356 of them, finishing the campaign with an excellent passing accuracy of 84.59%.
His composure under pressure and willingness to recycle possession would suit Alonso’s possession-based style, where defenders are expected to initiate attacks rather than simply clear their lines.
The attacking side still needs work
Where Chavarría still has room for improvement is in the final third. Unlike Marc Cucurella, whose overlapping runs and attacking instincts have become a key feature of Chelsea’s play, the Spaniard offers less penetration going forward.
He completed just 20 successful take-ons throughout the season and failed to carry the ball into the opposition penalty area on any of those occasions. If Alonso intends to use highly aggressive full-backs, Chavarría may initially need to adapt his game to become more adventurous in attacking situations.
That said, there are encouraging signs. He registered 321 progressive carries during the campaign, with 178 of those involving runs of at least 10 metres towards the opposition goal. While he may not yet be an elite attacking outlet, he has demonstrated the ability to advance the ball effectively and help move his team up the pitch.
Will he succeed in the Premier League?
The Premier League presents a different challenge to La Liga, particularly for defenders adapting to the league’s speed and physicality. Chavarría may require time to adjust, especially when facing quicker wingers and the relentless intensity of English football.

However, Xabi Alonso has built a reputation for improving players through coaching rather than simply relying on established stars.
If Chelsea complete the signing, Chavarría is likely to be given every opportunity to prove himself. His defensive intelligence, calmness on the ball and tactical discipline provide a strong foundation, and with the right guidance, he could develop into another important piece of Alonso’s rebuilding project at Stamford Bridge.
