Calum McFarlane praises Chelsea’s grit and character after the Blues beat Leeds United to reach their first FA Cup final since 2022.
Interim coach Calum McFarlane praised Chelsea after their 1-0 win over Leeds United booked a place in the FA Cup final.
Chelsea headed into Wembley surrounded by uncertainty following the midweek dismissal of Liam Rosenior, whose departure came after a disastrous run of five straight Premier League defeats without scoring.
With morale low and pressure mounting, McFarlane admitted the match represented a major psychological test for a squad trying to recover from one of the club’s bleakest periods in recent memory.
The Blues were forced to withstand heavy pressure from Leeds at different stages, but McFarlane was most impressed by the grit his players showed in difficult moments when the game threatened to swing away from them.
Chelsea eventually found the decisive breakthrough in the 23rd minute when Enzo Fernández headed home, delivering a particularly significant contribution after his complicated relationship with Rosenior earlier in the season. McFarlane highlighted the midfielder’s fighting mentality, insisting that in high-pressure knockout ties, attitude and willingness to compete can matter just as much as tactical perfection.

Having already served one brief spell as caretaker earlier in the campaign, McFarlane said his familiarity with the squad helped him understand what the players needed mentally after such a turbulent week.
Chelsea will now face Manchester City in the FA Cup final on May 16, and while McFarlane recognizes the scale of that challenge, he believes the character shown against Leeds offers hope that the Blues can still rescue something meaningful from a chaotic season.
