Kylian Mbappe’s second-half penalty secured a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Paraguay as France overcame their toughest World Cup test yet to reach the quarter-finals

France secured their place in the FIFA World Cup quarter-finals with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Paraguay at Lincoln Financial Field, as Kylian Mbappe’s second-half penalty finally broke the resistance of a disciplined South American side.

Fresh from eliminating Germany on penalties in the previous round, Paraguay arrived with a clear game plan to frustrate France’s free-flowing attack.

Gustavo Alfaro’s side sat deep, defended with discipline, and disrupted Les Bleus’ rhythm through relentless pressing, and a lot of physical challenges.

Despite enjoying more than 80% possession during the opening stages and dominating the ball, Didier Deschamps’ men struggled to create meaningful opportunities.

Paraguay’s compact defensive shape limited France to just five first-half attempts, with neither goalkeeper forced into a save before the break.

The frustration eventually boiled over midway through the first half when Mbappe reacted angrily after a heavy challenge from Andres Cubas, sparking a mass confrontation involving players from both teams.

France emerged after the restart with greater urgency as the soaring temperatures continued to test both sides. Manu Kone finally forced Orlando Gill into action with a fierce long-range effort, while the introduction of Desire Doue just after the hour mark immediately injected fresh energy into the French attack.

Doue’s impact proved decisive only minutes later when the Paris Saint-Germain youngster danced past several defenders before being brought down inside the penalty area by Diego Gomez.

After lengthy attempts by Paraguay to delay proceedings, Mbappe calmly sent Gill the wrong way from the spot to score the game’s only goal.

With the breakthrough finally secured, France adopted a more pragmatic approach during the closing stages, slowing the tempo and managing the game effectively whenever Paraguay attempted to build momentum.

Mbappe nearly doubled the lead in stoppage time, but Gill produced an excellent double save to keep the scoreline respectable.

While it was far from their most fluent performance of the tournament, France demonstrated another side of their game by grinding out victory against one of the World Cup’s most organised teams.

Les Bleus now turn their attention to a quarter-final showdown with Morocco.
