More points dropped to ten men

Dominic Solanke scored in stoppage time to earn Tottenham a 1-1 draw at Manchester United, extending both clubs’ winless runs and increasing the pressure on Michael Carrick.

United appeared set to claim three points after Bryan Mbeumo broke the deadlock in the 73rd minute, but following Rodrigo Bentancur’s dismissal, a defensive error from Lisandro Martinez allowed Spurs to snatch an equaliser. The result leaves Tottenham in the relegation zone after six Premier League matches without a victory, while United remain 12th.

United still struggling

If there was anything positive for Manchester United to take away from this match, it was that the late draw prevented a difficult week from becoming even worse. Matheus Cunha scored a deflected equaliser to spare his side a third defeat in seven days as Michael Carrick’s side drew 1-1 with Fulham at Craven Cottage.

However, the performance offered little evidence that a gloomy United side can see the sun again. They struggled badly for most of the game and were largely outplayed by Fulham. They go into the international break in the bottom half of the table.

Crisis call for Carrick?

United’s ability to somehow turn something promising into a complete disaster may soon become the stuff of legend. Here they contrived to lose 3-2 at Old Trafford after taking a 2-0 lead in the first 10 minutes against Brighton in the Carabao Cup.

Shea Lacey marked his full debut with an excellent early goal and Mason Mount quickly doubled the advantage. Carrick’s side looked set to comfortably bounce back from humiliation of the Manchester derby at the weekend, but they contrived to throw it all away.

Charalampos Kostoulas pulled one back for Brighton before Pascal Gross equalised, and Maxim De Cuyper completed the turnaround in the second half. United had chances to recover but could not find another goal.

It is another early exit from the Carabao Cup after the defeat to Grimsby under Amorim last season. The crisis bells are tolling.

Derby disaster

United were beaten 1-0 in the Manchester derby at Old Trafford by a City side that played most of the match with 10 men. Phil Foden’s early red card should have changed the game, but United struggled to make their numerical advantage count.

Not that anyone who has watched United in the last decade would be surprised.

Erling Haaland eventually scored the only goal for City in the second half. There was a controversial decision involving Enzo Fernandez, who was offside and had attempted a diving header but was adjudged as not interfering with play.

But United will rightly be more concerned about their tendency to lose games despite having an extra man on the pitch. It has now happened three times in the past year: against Everton under Ruben Amorim, and against Newcastle and City under Carrick.

Back and comfortable in Europe

Manchester United got the response they needed after the disappointing draw at Everton, sweeping aside Sabah 4-0 at Old Trafford in their opening European match of the season.

It was a straightforward night for United, who had enough quality to settle the match without having to produce anything particularly extraordinary. Four goals and a clean sheet gave Michael Carrick’s side a chance to put the frustrations of the league behind them.

Scores are even at Everton

United looked set to claim victory when Benjamin Sesko scored in the 88th minute to restore their lead, but  Everton’s Maitland-Niles had the last word from distance.

United snooze, but don’t lose

When Manchester United went 1-0 down to Ipswich in Sunday’s game it seemed to some like another inexorable spiral towards doom. But by the end, United had run riot.

Bruno Fernandes, who was crowned PFA Player of the Year in midweek for his exploits last season, scored a hat-trick, including a penalty, as if to calm fans’ anxiety over his misses in pre-season. Bryan Mbeumo also got on the scoresheet with a fine goal at the end.

Business as usual for United

When was the last time United had a good opening day of the season? You probably have to go back to the 5-1 victory over Leeds in 2021, under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

United, once again, quickly put a damper on any hopes their fans might have had going into the season, contriving to lose 2-0 at newly promoted Hull.

Carrick at the wheel?

After an impressive stint as caretaker manager in the second half of last season, Michael Carrick was rewarded with the permanent job at Manchester United.

But is it really a reward, or something closer to a punishment? There are three ways this could go. Carrick could do an amazing job at United. Or he could do an inconspicuous job, simply keep the club steady for a couple of seasons and then step away for the main man to come in.

The third way is that he becomes the next manager from the meat rack to be sliced to pieces.

Nevertheless, there is at least some structure to United not previously seen. The club completed a midfield rebuild this summer and, forsooth, fans might even harbour some hope this season.
