Dominic Solanke scored in stoppage time to earn Tottenham a 1-1 draw at Manchester United, extending both clubs’ winless runs and increasing the pressure on managers Michael Carrick and Roberto De Zerbi.
United appeared set to claim three points after Bryan Mbeumo broke the deadlock in the 73rd minute, but Rodrigo Bentancur’s dismissal and a defensive error from Lisandro Martinez allowed Spurs to snatch an equaliser. The result leaves Tottenham in the relegation zone after six Premier League matches without a victory, while United remain 12th.
The draw offered little relief to either side. United have now gone four league games without a win, with their supporters responding to another frustrating performance with boos at half-time and the final whistle. Tottenham, meanwhile, showed greater persistence after falling behind but continue to struggle for victories under De Zerbi.
Chances were scarce in the opening stages, although United goalkeeper Senne Lammens was forced into an early save after a misplaced pass allowed Solanke to threaten. Tottenham also found opportunities through Mohammed Kudus, who fired narrowly wide after Sávio cut the ball back into his path.
United struggled to establish control, giving the visitors room to attack while failing to create enough clear openings of their own. Amad Diallo had an opportunity to put the hosts ahead on the counterattack, but Antonín Kinsky kept him out.
The home side’s defensive uncertainty also offered Tottenham opportunities. Conor Gallagher was presented with a chance after another United error, but the visitors failed to take advantage. The first half ended amid further discontent from the Old Trafford crowd.
The pattern continued after the interval. Solanke failed to convert from close range after a Sávio delivery, while a goal for Youri Tielemans at the other end was ruled out after the ball had gone out of play in the build-up.
Both managers attempted to change the game through substitutions, and the contest became more open as the teams traded attacks. Bruno Fernandes tried an ambitious effort for United, while Kobbie Mainoo produced an important defensive intervention to prevent Sávio from making the most of an opportunity.
United eventually found the breakthrough through a move that provided a rare moment of precision. Luke Shaw passed to Matheus Cunha on the left, and the Brazilian delivered the ball to Mbeumo inside the penalty area. The forward turned sharply before driving a low finish past Kinsky in the 73rd minute.
The goal appeared to put Carrick’s side in control, but the match changed again five minutes later following a confrontation between Shaw and Bentancur.
The Tottenham midfielder launched a dangerous challenge as Shaw pursued a pass from Fernandes. Shaw reacted by shoving Bentancur, who responded by thrusting his head towards the United defender. Referee Stuart Attwell sent Bentancur off and booked Shaw and Jan Paul van Hecke as players from both sides became involved in the ensuing confrontation.
Shaw escaped with a yellow card for his part in the incident, while Tottenham were left to finish the match with 10 men. United had an opportunity to exploit their numerical advantage, but Mbeumo was denied by Kinsky as the hosts attempted to secure the result.
Instead, Tottenham found a way back into the game in added time. Sandro Tonali delivered a cross from the left that Martinez should have dealt with, but Solanke outmuscled the Argentine defender and directed a header past Lammens.
