MLS side Atlanta United are reportedly pushing to sign Romelu Lukaku, with Napoli willing to sell the Belgian striker for around €10 million this summer.
Atlanta United have emerged as serious contenders to sign Romelu Lukaku, with the MLS club reportedly stepping up efforts to bring the veteran striker to the United States before the summer transfer window closes.
The Belgian forward is no longer viewed as a key part of Napoli’s plans under new head coach Massimiliano Allegri, making a departure increasingly likely.
Lukaku has entered the final year of the contract he signed after joining Napoli from Chelsea in the summer of 2024. The 33-year-old played a pivotal role in helping the Partenopei win the 2024/25 Serie A title, but injuries severely limited his impact last season, restricting him to just five league appearances.
The arrival and emergence of Rasmus Hojlund has further pushed Lukaku down the pecking order, leaving the experienced striker without a guaranteed starting role at the Stadio Maradona. His future has been the subject of growing speculation, particularly after his agent suggested that Lukaku “isn’t the kind of person who stays where he’s not wanted.”
According to reports, Atlanta United are now pushing hard to secure the former Chelsea, Inter Milan and Manchester United forward. Discussions between the MLS club, Napoli and the player’s representatives are reportedly already underway, although negotiations remain in the early stages.
The report adds that Lukaku has already given his approval to the idea of moving to Major League Soccer, with the striker open to beginning a new chapter after an injury-hit campaign in Italy. While no agreement has been reached, Atlanta appear determined to test Napoli’s willingness to negotiate.
Napoli are reportedly prepared to listen to offers in the region of €10 million, a relatively modest fee for one of Belgium’s greatest-ever players. However, the transfer is complicated by Lukaku’s salary, with the striker currently earning around €8 million per season in gross wages, a figure that could prove challenging even for ambitious MLS clubs.
Despite those financial hurdles, Atlanta United remain optimistic that a deal can be structured. The club has been looking to add proven international quality to its attack, and Lukaku’s experience at the highest level of European football makes him an attractive target despite his recent injury struggles.
With Napoli ready to move in a different direction under Allegri and Lukaku seemingly open to leaving, the coming weeks could determine whether one of Belgium’s most prolific strikers swaps Serie A for Major League Soccer in what would be one of the league’s biggest signings of the summer.
