José Mourinho has been confirmed as Benfica’s new manager, signing a contract until 2027.
José Mourinho has been appointed as the new manager of Benfica, signing a contract that runs until the summer of 2027.
The 62-year-old Portuguese coach takes over from Bruno Lage, who was sacked after Benfica’s 3-2 Champions League defeat to Qarabag. Mourinho’s appointment comes with a break clause that would allow him or the club to end his contract in the 10 days following the final game of the season.
The break clause has been inserted due to the upcoming presidential election at Benfica in October. Mourinho indicated that this clause demonstrates the club’s respect for the electoral process and its members. “It’s a contract with great ethics behind it,” he said, praising the club’s approach to the situation.
Mourinho’s return to management comes after a brief stint out of work following his departure from Fenerbahce in late August. Despite having coached some of the biggest clubs in the world, including Inter, Real Madrid, and Manchester United, Mourinho expressed his honor and motivation in taking on the role at Benfica.
“I had the opportunity to work at the biggest clubs in the world, and I can say that none of the other giant clubs I’ve had the opportunity to coach made me feel more honoured, responsible or motivated than being the coach of Benfica,” he said.
Mourinho’s first game in charge will be against AVS in the league on Saturday. Benfica are currently sixth in the league, five points behind leaders Porto, who have a game in hand. Mourinho’s experience and tactical acumen will be crucial in helping Benfica climb the table and achieve success in the Champions League.
One of Mourinho’s early challenges will be against his former club Chelsea in the Champions League on September 30. Mourinho is no stranger to high-profile matches, and he will be looking to lead Benfica to victory against a strong Chelsea side. “The respect they have for me doesn’t change but I’m returning as the coach of the main rival,” he said, referencing his upcoming match against Porto, another significant fixture for Benfica.
With his wealth of experience and tactical expertise, Mourinho will be hoping to lead Benfica to success in the league and the Champions League.
