Declan Rice says Arsenal must embrace the pressure of history as they prepare for a defining Champions League semi-final clash against Atletico Madrid.

Declan Rice has challenged Arsenal to lean into the magnitude of the moment rather than shy away from it as the Gunners prepare for one of the biggest nights of Mikel Arteta’s reign.

Wednesday’s Champions League semi-final first leg against Atletico Madrid offers Arsenal a chance to move within touching distance of only their second ever final in Europe’s elite competition, and Rice believes the squad must welcome the pressure that comes with chasing club history.

For all of Arsenal’s domestic progress under Arteta, the team still carries the frustrating label of nearly men. Three consecutive Premier League runner-up finishes have created the impression of a side consistently close but not quite ruthless enough to finish the job.

Similar scars exist in Europe, where they were knocked out by eventual winners Paris Saint-Germain in last season’s semi-finals after also falling to Bayern Munich in the quarter-finals the year before.

That history makes this campaign feel especially significant. Arsenal have never lifted the Champions League trophy, with their only final appearance ending in heartbreak against Barcelona back in 2006. While the Premier League title remains the primary obsession at the Emirates, conquering Europe would offer an equally powerful statement that this generation possesses the mentality critics have often questioned.

Rice made it clear that the dressing room sees these coming weeks not as a burden but as an opportunity. Arsenal remain alive on two major fronts, sitting narrowly ahead in the league title race while also standing just three matches from a possible Champions League triumph.

According to the England midfielder, the repeated exposure to high-pressure fixtures over the past few years has toughened the squad mentally and emotionally for this exact scenario.

His message to teammates was simple: embrace it. Rice insisted Arsenal now know what these elite nights demand because they have lived through enough painful lessons to understand the margins involved. Rather than fearing another chapter of disappointment, he wants the squad to enjoy the status of being Champions League semi-finalists and attack the challenge with confidence.

There are still doubts outside North London, however. Arsenal’s recent defeats in other major occasions,  including the League Cup final and a damaging league loss to Manchester City, have kept alive the narrative that Arteta’s men stumble when the pressure is highest.

Even Saturday’s narrow win over Newcastle United did little to fully silence those concerns, though it at least halted a worrying dip in momentum after several poor results.

Fitness concerns now add another layer of uncertainty before the trip to Madrid. Both Eberechi Eze and Kai Havertz picked up knocks at the weekend, leaving Arsenal anxiously awaiting updates on two players capable of providing the attacking spark required against Diego Simeone’s notoriously disciplined side.

Eze in particular has emerged as a vital creative influence, taking his tally to 10 goals for the season with another moment of quality against Newcastle.

Rice was especially vocal in his praise for his England teammate, describing Eze as a player built for decisive moments and someone Arsenal will need desperately over the final stretch. He highlighted the midfielder’s exceptional ball striking and his ability to produce inspiration in tight contests, suggesting that if Arsenal are to finally shake off the nearly-men tag, players of Eze’s profile must deliver when margins are smallest.
