Chelsea are reportedly advancing in talks for Xabi Alonso as the club weighs up several high-profile options following Liam Rosenior’s departure.
Xabi Alonso has now emerged as one of the strongest contenders to take over at Stamford Bridge following the departure of Liam Rosenior after the club’s disastrous collapse in the race for European qualification.
Chelsea are believed to be strongly considering the Spaniard as they look for a coach capable of rebuilding confidence, developing young talent and restoring Chelsea to the top end of English football after another chaotic campaign.

Alonso’s reputation remains high despite a difficult and short-lived spell at Real Madrid. While his return to the Spanish capital did not produce the success many expected, there is still widespread belief that his work at Bayer Leverkusen showed the true level of his managerial ability.
When Alonso first arrived in Germany, Leverkusen were drifting dangerously close to the relegation zone and looked devoid of direction. Within months he had stabilised the club, and by the following season he had transformed them into Bundesliga champions, remarkably guiding them through the league unbeaten while dethroning Bayern Munich.
Perhaps the most attractive part of Alonso’s profile from Chelsea’s perspective is how he achieved that success. He built a dynamic, tactically disciplined side around hungry young players, a trait that aligns naturally with Chelsea’s current squad, which is one of the youngest and most expensive development projects in Europe.
I like Xabi Alonso but he has only had one good season and not sure if he will do well at Chelsea. pic.twitter.com/blpPSK0PXp

That fit has made him an especially appealing name to decision-makers at Stamford Bridge, who are under increasing pressure to finally appoint a coach capable of turning potential into sustained results.
Chelsea’s recruitment strategy over the past three years has stocked the dressing room with youth, but the club still lacks the tactical cohesion and leadership to make that investment meaningful.
Alonso is not the only name under serious consideration. Bournemouth boss Andoni Iraola remains admired for the structure and aggression he has brought to his side, while Marco Silva is also viewed as a Premier League-proven option after continuing to overachieve with Fulham.
There is also the romantic but complicated possibility of a reunion with Antonio Conte. The Italian delivered Premier League and FA Cup success during his previous spell in West London and has since enhanced his reputation further with title-winning work at Inter Milan and Napoli.
However, Conte is also heavily linked with the vacant Italy national football team job, which could complicate any Chelsea move.
