Xabi Alonso says Morgan Rogers will thrive alongside Cole Palmer as the new Chelsea boss outlines his tactical vision and ambitions ahead of the new season.
Xabi Alonso has outlined his vision for Chelsea’s new-look attack after welcoming record signing Morgan Rogers, insisting the England international will form a strong partnership with Cole Palmer as the Blues begin a new chapter under his leadership.
The former Bayer Leverkusen manager described Rogers as a “great signing” after Chelsea completed a British-record £117 million deal to bring the versatile midfielder from Aston Villa. Alonso believes the 23-year-old will add quality and flexibility to a squad that is aiming to recover from a disappointing 10th-place Premier League finish last season.

Speaking ahead of his first match in charge against Western Sydney Wanderers in Australia, Alonso said Chelsea had strengthened exactly where they needed to. “It’s a great signing. I think that in that position, we needed an important player, and I’m sure there were not many better options than Morgan. We are delighted. It means a lot for everyone,” he said.
How Rogers Will Fit Into Chelsea’s Attack
One of the biggest talking points following Rogers’ arrival is how Chelsea will fit their abundance of attacking talent into the same lineup. Alongside Palmer, the Blues also have Pedro Neto, Estevao Willian and summer recruit Geovany Quenda competing for attacking midfield roles, but Alonso insists he already has a clear plan.
“I have a plan. I have an idea. I can see them linking really well,” Alonso said of pairing Rogers with Palmer. “You need to have a good mix, good stability players and players that can play with more freedom. If we get that balance right and those special players in the right positions, I think we will be more competitive with the ball and against the ball.”
Alonso also highlighted Rogers’ versatility as one of the key reasons Chelsea pushed so hard to sign him. Although Rogers is unavailable for the club’s Australian tour after helping England finish third at the World Cup, the Chelsea boss believes the midfielder can operate in several attacking roles while maintaining his effectiveness.
“I think one of his best qualities is that he’s flexible,” Alonso explained. “He can play close to the striker, on the right, but I think more coming from the left. We will play him where he enjoys his football and where he can build good connections with the players around him. If we get those little associations right, it will be a great step forward in the quality of our game.”

Alonso Details Chelsea’s Long-Term Project
Beyond discussing Rogers, Alonso also shared his broader vision for Chelsea as he prepares for his first full season in English football. The Spaniard emphasized that rebuilding the club will require both quality and the right mentality after missing out on European competition last season.
“We want to build a competitive team. We are in that process. We have great quality and great talent,” Alonso said. “We need to know what it takes to compete in the Premier League, and we want to have a squad with the right balance between quality and mentality. But I think we are starting the new season with good energy.”
The 44-year-old, who previously guided Bayer Leverkusen to an unbeaten Bundesliga and DFB-Pokal double before a brief spell at Real Madrid, also revealed he will not completely overhaul Chelsea’s style of play. Instead, he intends to evolve the team’s tactical identity with a flexible approach that can adapt to different opponents.
“It’s not about changing everything. It’s about updating and developing what they have already done with new concepts,” Alonso said. “We will be flexible in our tactics and game plans because many things that I like they have already done. Now it’s about improving and adding new ideas.”
With pre-season fixtures against Western Sydney Wanderers, Tottenham Hotspur and Juventus still to come, Alonso hopes those matches will lay the foundation for a campaign that can return Chelsea to competing for major honors.
