Brentford Humiliate Tottenham in Nightmare Start To The New Season

Brentford stunned Tottenham 3-0 on the Premier League’s opening day as Roberto De Zerbi’s rebuild suffered a nightmare start in west London.

Roberto De Zerbi could hardly have imagined a worse start to life as Tottenham Hotspur manager.

After a summer of huge spending, optimism and talk of a new era in north London, Spurs arrived at the Gtech Community Stadium hoping to show that their painful struggles of the last two seasons were finally behind them.

Instead, they were completely outplayed and humiliated by Brentford, who cruised to a 3-0 victory and sent a very early warning to the rest of the Premier League.

From the opening whistle, it was clear that Tottenham were in for a long afternoon.

Brentford came flying out of the blocks, pressing Spurs high and forcing De Zerbi’s side into mistakes.

Chance after chance came and went before the Bees finally got the goal their pressure deserved. Club-record signing Mamadou Sangaré combined beautifully with Dango Ouattara before cutting the ball back for Keane Lewis-Potter, who calmly swept it into the net.

The stadium erupted, and Tottenham suddenly looked like a team that had never played together before.

It could have been even worse. Just moments later, Igor Thiago rose highest inside the box and sent a powerful header crashing against the crossbar. Spurs were hanging on, and every Brentford attack looked capable of producing another goal.

Tottenham were given another escape when Ouattara found himself racing towards goal, only to let the opportunity slip away with a poor touch. But there was no escape moments later. Mathias Jensen’s powerful effort was spilled by Antonin Kinsky, and Vitaly Janelt was quickest to react, tapping into an empty net to make it 2-0.

De Zerbi knew something had to change. He made a double substitution at half-time, hoping to drag his team back into the contest. Instead, Brentford delivered another punch just five minutes after the restart.

Sangaré’s effort was saved by Kinsky, but Michael Kayode was perfectly positioned to smash home the rebound from close range. 3-0. Game over.

There was still time for Tottenham to make things interesting when Rodrigo Bentancur brought down Kevin Schade inside the penalty area. But even then, luck was not on Thiago’s side as he stepped up from 12 yards and struck the post, leaving Spurs with a tiny glimmer of hope.

Mikey Moore tried desperately to take it. The young winger found himself with three opportunities to pull one back, but Caoimhín Kelleher stood firm each time. De Zerbi threw more attacking players onto the pitch, but nothing worked. Tottenham simply had no answer.

For Brentford, this was more than just three points. It was their first-ever league victory over Tottenham at the Gtech Community Stadium, and what a way to achieve it.

For Spurs, however, the defeat raises uncomfortable questions immediately. They have spent heavily, rebuilt the squad and placed their hopes in De Zerbi, but if the opening day is anything to go by, there is still a lot of work to do.

The new era could not have started any worse.
