Arsenal 3-0 Lille: Timber 64, Eze 67, Saka 71
Arsenal scored three times in seven second-half minutes to beat Lille 3-0 at the Emirates Stadium. Jurien Timber broke the deadlock in the 64th minute before Eberechi Eze and Bukayo Saka struck in quick succession to settle a contest that had threatened to become frustrating for Mikel Arteta’s side.
The victory was Arsenal’s 14th consecutive win in the league phase of the competition, extending a remarkable run that dates back to November 2024.
The hosts had struggled to find a way through Lille’s defence for much of the evening, despite enjoying the majority of possession. It took a moment of individual quality from Timber to turn the match in their favour.
Arsenal began with five changes from their previous match, with Martin Odegaard and Saka among those rested. Noni Madueke was the main source of attacking threat early on, combining effectively with Timber down the right.
Bruno Guimaraes wasted a good opportunity after a move involving the pair, while Mikel Merino headed Timber’s cross straight at Lille goalkeeper Berke Ozer. The home side were unable to convert their promising positions into goals, allowing the visitors to grow in confidence.
Lille briefly thought they had taken the lead when Ayase Ueda found the net in the first half, but a VAR check confirmed the striker was offside. The visitors offered little else going forward, yet their defensive organisation continued to frustrate Arsenal.
Eze, making a rare start, forced Ozer into a save as the hosts cranked up the pressure. The goalkeeper then dealt with a deflected effort from Guimaraes just before half-time, ensuring the teams went into the break without a goal.
Arsenal continued to dominate possession after the restart but initially struggled to create clear openings. Guimaraes appealed for a penalty after going down under pressure from Alexsandro, but referee Felix Zwayer waved away the protests and VAR did not recommend a review.
Arteta’s response was to prepare Saka, Odegaard and Kai Havertz for introduction. But before the changes, Arsenal finally found the breakthrough through Timber. Madueke supplied the pass, and Timber’s excellent first touch took him away from Lille captain Benjamin Andre. The defender then lifted the ball over the advancing Ozer to put Arsenal ahead in the 64th minute.
Saka came in guns blazing. The England winger received the ball in the right channel before delivering a cross that Eze finished with his left foot to double the lead three minutes later. Then he was sharp again to exchange passes with Havertz before finishing the move himself to seal the win.
