Benjamin Sesko has withdrawn from the Slovenia squad for the international window over a recurring shin injury.
Manchester United said on Monday that the striker will undergo tests before a decision is made on how he should recover from the problem. The injury is not thought to be serious, but Sesko could be required to rest.
“Benjamin will undergo tests this week before defining his individual recovery plan,” United said.
Sesko missed training after playing against Brighton in the Carabao Cup last week and was subsequently left out of the squad for Sunday’s 1-1 draw at Fulham. United’s next match is against Tottenham on 10 October, with his availability for that game expected to become clearer once the test results are assessed.
Michael Carrick said after the Fulham draw that the club were still waiting for more information.
“We’re not sure with Ben yet,” Carrick said. “He felt a bit of pain after the game [against Brighton] so we’re assessing him. At the moment, he definitely wasn’t ready for [Fulham], so I haven’t really got any more news to give you at this point. We’ll have to see what that brings.”
The 23-year-old has been managing the shin problem since sustaining a kick towards the start of spring. He continued playing through the issue until Liverpool’s visit to Old Trafford in May and scored 12 goals during his first season at United.
Sesko had also spent time at Carrington in June as he worked towards returning after missing pre-season. He said after scoring against Sabah that he had been kept out for longer than usual to give the injury time to heal.
The latest setback raises the prospect of another period on the sidelines, although the extent of the problem will not be known until the latest tests are completed.
Sesko joined United from RB Leipzig in 2025 for €76.5m. He has made two starts this season, in the Champions League and Carabao Cup, and has scored twice.
The forward has 16 goals in 45 international appearances for Slovenia but has not played for his country since October 2025 because of injury problems.
