Bayern Munich and Aston Villa are expected to discuss João Palhinha’s future after Friday’s pre-season friendly

João Palhinha’s future at Bayern Munich could become clearer this week, with the German champions and Aston Villa expected to hold fresh transfer talks following their pre-season friendly in Hong Kong.

The two clubs meet at Kai Tak Stadium on Friday, but the fixture could prove just as significant off the pitch as it is on it. Club representatives are expected to use the opportunity to continue negotiations over a potential move for the Portugal international.

Aston Villa have maintained a strong interest in Palhinha throughout the summer, viewing the experienced midfielder as an ideal addition to Unai Emery’s squad. However, discussions have stalled because of Bayern’s valuation, with the Bundesliga champions reportedly demanding around €25 million for the 31-year-old.

Villa are understood to consider that asking price too high and are hoping face-to-face discussions in Hong Kong can help bridge the gap between the two clubs. Whether Bayern are willing to lower their demands could determine if the deal progresses in the coming days.

Palhinha has publicly insisted that he wants to fight for his place at Bayern after an underwhelming first season in Germany. Despite those comments, his representatives are continuing to listen to offers as uncertainty remains over his role in Vincent Kompany’s plans.

The Portuguese midfielder is believed to be open to leaving if it becomes clear that regular playing time will be difficult to secure. A return to the Premier League could be an attractive option, particularly with Aston Villa offering the prospect of a key role in midfield.

For Bayern, selling Palhinha would also help reshape the squad ahead of the new season, while Villa see the former Fulham star as a player capable of adding experience, defensive solidity and Premier League know-how to their midfield.
