Bayern Munich may have to loan João Palhinha out again following interest from Benfica, Sporting CP and Aston Villa after Tottenham declined a permanent transfer.
Bayern Munich could be left with little choice but to sanction another loan move for João Palhinha as the Portuguese midfielder’s future remains unresolved ahead of the new season.
Tottenham Hotspur were keen to keep Palhinha after his successful loan spell in North London. Head coach Roberto De Zerbi reportedly viewed the midfielder as a key part of his long-term plans and pushed for a permanent transfer this summer.
However, Bayern refused to lower their valuation. The Bundesliga champions insisted that Tottenham activate the agreed €30 million purchase option, a figure Spurs were ultimately unwilling to meet, bringing negotiations to an end.
The collapse of that deal has complicated Bayern’s plans. While interest in Palhinha remains strong, none of the clubs currently monitoring his situation appear prepared to match the German club’s asking price.
Portuguese giants Benfica and Sporting CP are both interested in bringing the midfielder back to his homeland. However, both clubs are only in a position to pursue a loan agreement rather than a permanent transfer, something Bayern have been keen to avoid.
That leaves Aston Villa as Bayern’s most realistic hope of securing a full transfer. The Premier League side have been linked with the Portugal international as they continue strengthening their midfield, but no agreement has yet been reached.
Should Villa decide against meeting Bayern’s valuation, the German champions may have little option but to soften their stance. Lowering the asking price or agreeing to another temporary move could become necessary if they are to avoid keeping a player who no longer appears central to Vincent Kompany’s plans.
Palhinha has already returned to Bayern’s pre-season training at Säbener Straße while awaiting clarity over his future. With the transfer window continuing, both player and club remain hopeful that a solution can be found before the new campaign gets underway.
