The Catalan club have a big decision to make this summer regarding the England international
Marcus Rashford could join Barcelona permanently for €30m in the summer, but interest in the on-loan Manchester United forward may have cooled at the club.
Rashford wants to remain at Barcelona and those close to the player say they have not been informed of any final decision. However, United are not willing to renegotiate the terms already agreed, and Barcelona continue to have concerns over the financial implications of a permanent transfer.
Barcelona are expected to finalise plans for next season once the La Liga title race is settled. Victory or a draw against Real Madrid in Sunday’s clásico would secure the championship.
Rashford has made 46 appearances for Barcelona this season, scoring 13 goals and providing 14 assists. Despite mostly operating as a backup option, he has averaged a goal involvement every 88 minutes, the best rate among Barcelona’s forwards.
The 28-year-old has also delivered in important moments, including a brace against Newcastle United in the Champions League and an assist for Robert Lewandowski against Osasuna. Only Lamine Yamal and Fermin Lopez have scored more European goals for Barca this season.
Barcelona coach Hansi Flick has been impressed with Rashford’s attitude and professionalism, while teammates consider him a positive presence in the dressing room. Club officials also value the fact Rashford has accepted a secondary role behind Raphinha and Yamal without complaint.
Still, Barcelona’s finances are a concern. The club continue to operate above La Liga’s salary limit, meaning any permanent deal would have to fit within strict registration rules.
The club are considering the idea that signing a younger player on a longer contract could make more financial sense, even if the transfer fee is higher. Rashford’s age and salary are seen at the club as concerns, especially since he would have little resale value.
There are also sporting doubts. Rashford’s quality has not been questioned but some within the club feel he has been inconsistent and at times struggled to fully adapt to Flick’s demanding pressing system.
His displays in major matches have also been scrutinised. Rashford was handed an opportunity to impress after Raphinha suffered a hamstring injury in March, but failed to make a significant impact in the Champions League quarter-final against Atletico Madrid.
Barcelona will have to make a final decision once the season ends. It could go either way.
