England forward has produced 14 goals and 14 assists this season but his future in Spain remains in doubt
Barcelona will wait until the end of the season before making final decisions on the futures of Marcus Rashford and Robert Lewandowski, according to Hansi Flick.
The duo have played important roles in the club’s La Liga-winning campaign. Barcelona secured their 29th title on Sunday with a 2-0 win over Real Madrid, Rashford opening the scoring in the clásico as the Catalan side reached the finish line with three matches remaining.
Rashford joined Barcelona on loan from Manchester United last year and the club have the option to make the move permanent this summer for around €30m. The England forward has scored 14 goals and provided 14 assists in all competitions this season.
“At the end of the season, we will analyse everything,” Flick said regarding Rashford. “Then we will see what happens. Marcus gave us a lot. He has good numbers. I am thankful about that.”
Rashford has already indicated his desire to stay in Spain, saying after Sunday’s title-clinching victory that he would make himself stay if he was “a magician”.
Lewandowski’s future also remains unresolved. The Poland striker is out of contract in June and has attracted interest from clubs in Saudi Arabia, Major League Soccer and elsewhere in Europe. Barcelona have discussed extending his deal on reduced terms, although no agreement has been reached.
Flick, who previously worked with Lewandowski at Bayern Munich, said the club would assess the situation after the season ends.
“With Robert, what should I say?” Flick added. “I have won every title with the club[s] with him. I am proud to be a coach for this amazing player. We have to analyse it and see what happens next season.”
The Barcelona coach also confirmed he expects to sign a contract extension that would keep him at the club until 2028, with the option of an additional year.
“It’s a really good deal,” Flick said. “We can go to 2028 and then we see. If everything is right, we make the decision to go one year more. It’s a big commitment for us to work harder, harder than this season, to try and reach the best level with the team and to win titles.
“This is normal for Barcelona and I know everyone has this amazing dream to win the Champions League. We tried. We try it again.”
