Barcelona 2-0 Real Madrid: Rashford 9, Torres 18

How bad could it possibly get for Real Madrid? Just days after two of their stars were fined a combined €1m for fighting at the training ground, one forced to hospital because of it, they stood anaemic and powerless in the last clásico of the season as rivals Barcelona sealed their second league title in two years, their fifth trophy in that time, Madrid on the other hand now trophyless for the second season running.

The fight between Federico Valverde and Aurelien Tchouameni was a symbol of the disconnect, the lack of collective, of team spirit at the Bernabeu and Valdebebas. In his press conference before this clásico Hansi Flick contrasted that atmosphere nicely with the team spirit at Barcelona.

“The atmosphere, the connection between the players is something really special,” Flick said. “We have players with a lot of quality, world class players. The connection between everyone is amazing.”

That said, it was from an individual effort that Barcelona struck the first blow, and fittingly from that man Marcus Rashford, only a few days left to his year’s loan deal and still aiming to convince the club to think less of the financial nuances and more about what he can provide.

Here he curled in a superb free kick in the ninth minute to start his side off on a strong foot. Ten minutes later, the hosts doubled their lead through Ferran Torres after an excellent piece of improvisation from Dani Olmo. Meeting a clipped cross inside the area, Olmo cleverly flicked the ball through his legs into Torres’ path, and the forward smashed past Courtois from close range.

Madrid were not entirely in a walking coma here. They briefly threatened a response after the second goal, Gonzalo Garcia missing a clear opening after being played through by Raul Asencio, and Tchouameni also failing to hit the target. But there was too little effort and Barcelona remained in control for long stretches of the match.

Rashford nearly added another when Ferran Torres released him down the right, only for Thibaut Courtois to make a strong save. The Belgian goalkeeper also denied Torres again later in the second half to keep the scoreline respectable.

The visitors thought they had pulled one back shortly after the hour mark when Jude Bellingham finished from close range, but the midfielder was clearly offside and the goal was ruled out. Vinicius Junior also wasted a good opportunity after a defensive mistake from Pau Cubarsi allowed him through on goal, Joan Garcia denying him.

Frustration began to show from Madrid as the game became increasingly scrappy after the break. Dani Olmo and Raul Asencio were booked after clashing, before Trent Alexander-Arnold was also cautioned. At least they were feeling something now.
