Fenerbahce have sacked Jose Mourinho as their manager after the team failed to qualify for the Champions League.

Fenerbahce has officially announced the departure of Jose Mourinho as their head coach, following the team’s disappointing exit from the Champions League qualifiers.

The Turkish giants lost to Benfica in the playoff tie, with a 1-0 defeat in the second leg after a goalless draw in the first leg. This setback ultimately led to Mourinho’s dismissal, marking the end of his tenure with the club.

Mourinho joined Fenerbahce in June 2024, with high expectations to deliver both domestic and European success.

Although he led the team to a respectable second-place finish in the Super Lig last season, they trailed far behind champions Galatasaray. Despite a decent overall record, with 37 wins and 11 losses in 62 matches, the club’s failure to secure a Champions League spot was deemed unacceptable.

The Portuguese coach’s inability to display a clear vision or style of play was a subject of criticism during his time at Fenerbahce. His team’s struggles to score against Benfica in the Champions League playoffs exposed vulnerabilities that the club’s hierarchy could not overlook. The decision to part ways with Mourinho comes as Fenerbahce prepares to focus on the Europa League and the domestic title race.

In a statement, Fenerbahce thanked Mourinho for his efforts and wished him success in his future endeavors.

The club will now begin the search for a new head coach to lead the team in the upcoming challenges. Mourinho’s departure from Fenerbahce marks another high-profile exit in Turkish football, following Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s dismissal from Besiktas after their Conference League elimination.
