Liverpool will be without Jeremie Frimpong until after the international break, after the defender picked up a hamstring problem in the season opener against Bournemouth.

The 24-year-old was withdrawn just after the hour mark on the advice of the club’s medical staff, a decision Arne Slot admitted was questioned at the time but has since been vindicated.

“The medical team were completely right about Jeremie [Frimpong] to tell me to take him off because he is out until the end of the international break and that happened during the game,” Slot said.

“We felt he had an issue with his hamstring and it was a good call to take him off.”

Frimpong arrived from Bayer Leverkusen this summer with a positive injury record, having missed only two league games through injury in three seasons in Germany.

His absence now leaves Liverpool short at right-back. Conor Bradley has returned to training after injury issues of his own but he is still working his way back to full fitness. The same applies to centre-back Joe Gomez, who can also play at right-back.

Slot confirmed that Wataru Endo and Dominik Szoboszlai are among the players being considered as cover ahead of Monday’s trip to Newcastle.
