La Liga has long been keen on playing a regular-season match abroad, with president Javier Tebas pushing hard for it over the past few years

The Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) has approved a proposal for Barcelona to play a La Liga match in the US for the first time.

The chosen match is the club’s December fixture against Villareal, which was supposed to be played at the Yellow Submarine’s home ground of Estadio de la Cerámica.

The move will now see the match played at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami, which would represent the first time La Liga has staged a competitive match abroad.

Following a board meeting on Monday, the RFEF confirmed it had reviewed the necessary requirements for the fixture to go ahead in the US, although the Spanish federation still have to seek Fifa’s approval.

The body has said it now plans to submit a request to Uefa to begin this process.

La Liga has long been keen on playing a regular-season match abroad, with president Javier Tebas pushing hard for it over the past few years. But the move is controversial and has not been fully supported by all clubs, with Real Madrid particularly against it.

If the project gets the required approval from Fifa, it would be the first time a top-tier European league fixture has been held in the US.

Barcelona’s match against Villareal is supposed to take place at the weekend of December 16-18. It could still be held Stateside around that time, but the date has not been finalised yet.
