Manchester United head coach happy to work with a smaller group of players
Alejandro Garnacho is set to leave Manchester United this summer but it’s simply a matter of seeking a fresh start elsewhere rather than his abilities, head coach Ruben Amorim has said.
The 21-year-old has drawn interest from both Chelsea and Aston Villa, and Amorim said that a departure would suit all parties.
“You can see he’s a really talented boy,” said Amorim. “Sometimes things don’t work out. You cannot explain specifically what it is.
“But I have the feeling, I think it’s clear that Garnacho wants a different thing with a different leadership and I can understand that. So I think it’s not a problem.
“Sometimes you adapt to one guy, you have the connection. Other times, you want a new challenge so we try to make everything okay to all the parts – to the club, to the coach and to the players. It’s a natural thing in football.”
Garnacho broke into the United first team with promise under Erik ten Hag but struggled to hold down a regular role when Amorim arrived in November.
Including Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho and Antony, four forwards are expected to leave the club this summer, but United have only signed two replacements.
However, with United preparing for life without European competition next season, Amorim has made it clear that he wants to work with a tighter group of players.
“I’m really happy with the team,” said Amorim. “Without European competitions, I want a small squad so everyone feels really important.
“If you have a lot of players, you have one week to prepare and a lot of players are going to be out, and then in training they will be frustrated and then the quality of the training will drop.”
