Newcastle rejected a bid worth over £110m from Liverpool to sign Isak
Alexander Isak has returned to Newcastle after a week spent recovering and training in Spain.
The Swedish forward had been working privately with staff at former club Real Sociedad in San Sebastian, citing a thigh injury as the reason for skipping Newcastle’s pre-season tour of Asia.
While the club accepted the medical justification, his decision to train abroad has increased fears among Newcastle supporters that he has no intention of staying at the club beyond this summer.
Only 24 hours earlier, Newcastle rejected a £110m bid from Liverpool to sign Isak.
Liverpool’s offer included performance-based add-ons that would raise the fee beyond the upfront £110m payment. However, the total offer did not reach the £120m the Premier League champions proposed to Newcastle just last month.
It was also well below Newcastle’s £150m valuation of the player. The Magpies maintain that Isak is not for sale, but with Isak now possibly discontent, their position may come under more pressure in coming days.
On Saturday, Newcastle submitted a £70m bid for RB Leipzig’s Benjamin Sesko, but this was not a contingency plan in case Isak forces a move, as the club have been targeting a high-quality striker all summer.
