Manchester United remain interested and are in contact with Sesko’s representatives
RB Leipzig’s Benjamin Sesko was left out of the squad for the club’s pre-season fixture against Atalanta, after Newcastle United submitted a bid worth €80m for the striker.
Newcastle are intensifying their efforts to reinforce the No 9 position amid the speculation over Alexander Isak’s future.
The bid, submitted on Saturday morning, includes €75m upfront and a further €5m in add-ons. It matches Leipzig’s valuation of the 22-year-old Slovenia international.
All signs indicate Sesko will leave Germany this summer. The striker has reportedly informed teammates of his intention to move on. Talks are progressing, with Newcastle having already explained their project to the striker.
However, the Magpies are not alone in the race. Manchester United remain interested and are in contact with Sesko’s representatives. The player is said to be open to both Newcastle and United, and is yet to make a final decision.
Newcastle’s pursuit of Sesko comes as they brace for renewed interest in Isak, who is pushing to leave following an initial rejected bid from Liverpool earlier this month.
The Magpies remain adamant Isak will not be sold for less than £150m. They were also eager to sign a striker this summer even before uncertainty arose over Isak’s future.
However, they are now aware that they risk ending up with no trusted player at all in a position where they were expecting to have two.
They will also be eager to sign a replacement for Isak before any potential departure. Other clubs could raise the value of their players if Isak were to leave first, as they would be aware that Newcastle need to buy and also have Isak’s huge fee to spend.
