Club president says Barcelona will now focus on departures to reduce the wage bill

Barcelona president Joan Laporta has said the club will not bring anyone else in after the arrival of Marcus Rashford on loan from Manchester United.

Rashford became the third addition to Hansi Flick’s squad this window, following goalkeeper Joan Garcia and teenage forward Roony Bardghji. All three are expected to feature in the upcoming pre-season friendly against Vissel Kobe in Japan on Sunday.

“We’ve achieved what we set out to do,” Laporta told Mundo Deportivo. “Unless something unexpected happens, we don’t anticipate making any more signings. We have a good squad and a coach who wants to reinforce the first team when necessary with youngsters from the reserve team.”

Barcelona’s ability to register new signings remains subject to La Liga’s financial rules, but Laporta said the club are in a stable position and don’t need to sell players to comply.

“The key now is reducing the wage bill,” said Laporta. “Pablo Torre has left and there are other moves to be finalised soon, but I don’t think there are going to be any players leaving for big fees, even though there are offers.

“We don’t want to break up the team spirit that was built last season in the squad. We want to keep that magic.

“We will try to avoid any painful departures. I won’t talk about specific players because we’re happy with everyone. But there will be more adjustments because in some positions we have too many players.”
