Club’s financial problems were the main reason they failed to land Athletic Club’s Nico Williams
Marcus Rashford may see his debut for Barcelona delayed as the club still have issues with player registration.
The Manchester United winger is on the verge of completing a season-long loan move to Catalonia, but his ability to play for the Spanish champions may depend on La Liga’s approval of his registration.
Barcelona have to meet the league’s 1:1 rule, which means that their expenditure on players, including their wage bill and transfer fees, cannot exceed revenue. To comply with the regulations, the club have been struggling to either trim their wage bill or generate enough revenue to offset expenditure.
The issue delayed Dani Olmo and Pau Victor’s registration last season, and Jules Kounde faced the same problem after joining from Sevilla in 2022. This summer, it was the main reason why Barcelona failed to land Athletic Club’s Nico Williams.
The player wanted assurances that he would be registered, specifically a clause inserted into his contract that he could leave if the club were unable to register him.
Barcelona turned to Rashford after the deal with Williams broke down. The 27-year-old forward has also agreed to take a significant pay cut to push the deal through, which would have been particularly important to Barcelona due to their struggles with their wage bill.
Regarding the situation, pundit Andy Brassell said on talkSPORT: “There’s no guarantee, certainly if you believe Javier Tebas, the president of La Liga, that Barcelona will be able to register Rashford for the moment.
“That is something that we have to keep an eye on, as with every Barcelona signing. That was what made Nico Williams back out of the deal.”
