Grealish needs regular football and a move to Newcastle has emerged as a realistic opportunity
Jack Grealish is expected to leave Manchester City this summer, with Newcastle United reportedly interested in securing the winger’s services on loan.
The 29-year-old endured a frustrating 2024-25 season, playing just 715 minutes in the Premier League, with only one goal and one assist. He spent the final stretch of the campaign mostly on the bench, including the FA Cup final against Crystal Palace where youngster Claudio Echeverri was handed a debut while Grealish stared on.
The England international is also not expected to be part of the group heading to the United States for the Club World Cup, though reports suggest this is because City want him to take some time to sort out his future.
Newcastle, who can offer Grealish Champions League football next season, are not in the financial position to meet City’s valuation for a permanent transfer. With two years remaining on the player’s £300,000-per-week contract, any deal would require City to subsidise his wages, a key condition for the Magpies to proceed.
Grealish recently pushed back against criticism on social media about his performance at the club, refusing to accept talk that he has been out of form. The player has also given no indication that he wants to leave the Sky Blues, so staying to fight for his place remains a possibility.
However, it is understood that Grealish is disappointed at his absence from the England squad and wants to be back in the fold ahead of the 2026 World Cup. England manager Thomas Tuchel has made it clear that the player needs to be playing regularly for that to happen.
Starting over at another club appears to be the most feasible option for Grealish and Newcastle may be a realistic opportunity to do that. It remains to be seen whether the move can happen this summer.
