Progress is being made in the club’s transfer department but head coach Ruben Amorim must deliver matching results next season
Manchester United have a “clear expectation of improvement” going into next season, the club have said in their latest financial results statement.
There has been serious recruitment activity going on at Old Trafford very early this summer, in contrast to previous seasons in recent history when United have often dallied, eventually leaving themselves short and desperate late in the window.
The club have already secured Matheus Cunha from Wolves and are preparing a second and likely final bid for Brentford’s Bryan Mbeumo, aiming to revitalise their stagnant attacking line with Premier League-proven forwards. A new striker to lead the line is also high on the club’s list, with Sporting No 9 Viktor Gyokeres among them.
However, much as progress is being made in the transfer department, head coach Ruben Amorim has been sent a message that things have to get better in the 2025-26 campaign.
In his section of the club’s financial statement, CEO Omar Berrada publicly acknowledged the disappointment of last season, saying: “We were proud to reach the final of the UEFA Europa League but, ultimately, we were disappointed to finish as runner-up in Bilbao.
“We had a difficult season in the Premier League, which we all know fell below our standards and we have a clear expectation of improvement next season.”
Ruben Amorim, who took over as head coach in November 2024, has been brutally honest in assessing the squad, emphasising the need for a summer rebuild. That rebuild is currently ongoing and the Portuguese is now preparing to enter his first full season with a full summer to reshape the team.
He must also be aware that when that season finally begins in August, there will be little excuse for the kind of performances the club have delivered under him in the last six months.
