Manchester City star shares dressing room feeling as he nears emotional farewell
Kevin De Bruyne has explained how his Manchester City teammates took the news that he will be leaving the club at the end of the season.
The Belgian scored the only goal in City’s 1-0 win over Wolves on Friday which kept them on track to finish in the top five and qualify for the Champions League. It was De Bruyne’s penultimate match at the Etihad Stadium and he revealed what his teammates think of his imminent departure, which was confirmed last month.
“I’m just trying to play as good as I can,” the midfielder told Sky Sports. “I know that I only have one home game left but I just try to do my job and that’s what I did today.
“A lot of teammates have spoken to me, they’re sad also that I’m leaving but sometimes that’s how it goes in life. The way I’m performing and acting is how everyone should be.”
De Bruyne reiterated that he still has something to offer in the Premier League, having previously expressed his disappointment that the club refused to give him a new contract.
“I don’t know what the future will be, but I know that I can still play here,” he added.
Guardiola Addresses De Bruyne Contract Extension Chances
Guardiola himself has admitted that replacing De Bruyne will be “almost impossible”, but stopped short of calling for the decision to be reversed.
The 33-year-old Belgian has provided something special to Manchester City not just by what he contributes on the football pitch, but also in terms of his relationship with fans, according to Guardiola.
