The former Manchester United interim coach was only able to deliver eight points in 20 games as the Foxes drop down to the Championship

Leicester City are preparing for another managerial change, with former England interim boss Lee Carsley emerging as the club’s preferred candidate to replace Ruud van Nistelrooy.

Van Nistelrooy took over from Steve Cooper in November on a two-and-a-half-year deal, but is now destined for an exit, according to Sky Sports.

His tenure at the King Power Stadium will come to an end following a disastrous spell that has seen the Foxes plummet back into the Championship, with the Dutchman only able to squeeze out eight points in 20 games. Since his appointment, the club are bottom for all attacking stats in the Premier League.

However, Leicester may face a financial headache in axing the former Manchester United striker. It is understood that the club could breach PSR if they’re forced to pay out his full compensation package. Van Nistelrooy is reportedly reluctant to step aside without a settlement.

Leicester are nevertheless already planning for life after him. Carsley has emerged as the leading contender, with the club’s hierarchy impressed by his work in the England youth team and his short interim spell with the senior side after Gareth Southgate stepped down.

Other names in the frame include Sheffield Wednesday’s Danny Rohl and former Southampton boss Russell Martin, but Carsley is said to be the front-runner. A final decision could depend on Leicester’s ongoing financial calculations, as well as Van Nistelrooy’s willingness to negotiate an early exit.

For now, the Dutchman remains in charge and is expected to be on the touchline for Leicester’s trip to Wolves at Molineux this weekend, though it may well be one of his last appearances in the Foxes’ dugout.
