Oliver Kahn has urged Germany fans to remain patient following Jürgen Klopp’s appointment, insisting the national team’s struggles require deeper structural changes than simply hiring a new head coach.
Germany legend Oliver Kahn has warned supporters not to expect an instant turnaround under new national team coach Jürgen Klopp, arguing that the country’s footballing problems run much deeper than a change in management.
Klopp was officially unveiled as Germany’s new head coach on Friday, ending months of speculation. The former Borussia Dortmund and Liverpool boss has been entrusted with restoring one of international football’s biggest nations after a string of disappointing tournament performances.
The excitement surrounding Klopp’s arrival has been evident, with his first press conference generating fresh optimism among fans hoping Germany can return to competing for major trophies once again.
Despite sharing that optimism, Kahn believes the German Football Association faces much bigger challenges than simply appointing a world-class coach. Speaking during a charity golf event, the former Bayern Munich goalkeeper said the national team’s issues cannot be solved overnight.
“Personally, I don’t think it’s as simple as many people imagine,” Kahn said. “The problems run much deeper.” He questioned the long-term direction of German football, asking what type of players the country wants to develop and what identity the national team should have going forward.
Kahn stressed that Germany must first establish a clear footballing philosophy before expecting sustained success. In his view, player development, tactical identity and long-term planning will be just as important as Klopp’s influence on the touchline.
Even so, the former Bayern Munich CEO remains confident that Klopp is the right man to lead the rebuild. Germany’s new era will officially begin in September when Klopp takes charge of his first match, an away UEFA Nations League clash against the Netherlands, where fans will get their first glimpse of his vision for the four-time world champions.
