Tottenham are preparing an improved offer for Sandro Tonali as Manchester City monitor the Newcastle United midfielder ahead of a potential transfer battle.
Tottenham Hotspur are preparing an improved offer for Newcastle United midfielder Sandro Tonali as they look to beat growing competition from Manchester City. Spurs remain determined to strengthen their midfield this summer and believe the Italy international is one of their top priorities.
The North London club are reportedly confident that Tonali would be open to joining if they can reach an agreement with Newcastle. However, their opening bid of around £75 million was quickly rejected, with the Magpies making it clear the offer fell well below their valuation.
Newcastle are in no rush to part ways with one of their key players and have reportedly set an asking price of £100 million before they would even consider entering serious negotiations. Meeting that valuation would require Tottenham to break their transfer record, surpassing the £65 million they spent on Dominic Solanke.

Despite Newcastle’s firm stance, Tottenham are expected to return with a revised proposal. Club officials have been working on a new payment structure that would bring the overall package closer to Newcastle’s demands, although it is still expected to fall short of the £100 million valuation.
There is also growing speculation that Tonali could be interested in a fresh challenge. Reports suggest intermediaries have informed Newcastle that the Italian midfielder is open to leaving St James’ Park, giving Tottenham renewed optimism that a deal could eventually be completed.
Newcastle had initially hoped that, if Tonali were to leave, he would move abroad rather than strengthen a Premier League rival. AC Milan had been linked with a reunion, but their interest has failed to materialise, opening the door for English clubs to step up their pursuit.
Manchester City are now closely monitoring the situation as they continue searching for midfield reinforcements. Although Pep Guardiola’s side are expected to complete the signing of Elliot Anderson, City remain in the market for another central midfielder. They have also tracked Bruno Guimaraes, but sources believe Tonali could prove to be the more realistic option if Newcastle soften their stance.

Tottenham are therefore eager to move quickly before City’s interest intensifies. With the midfielder market expected to gather pace once players return from World Cup duty, Spurs hope an improved offer can put them in pole position and prevent a transfer battle for one of Europe’s most sought-after midfielders.
