Having already secured the Serie A title and added the Coppa Italia with victory in Wednesday’s final, Inter looked understandably short of intensity during long periods of the contest, while Verona arrived with their relegation fate already confirmed.
The visitors actually created the better openings during the early stages, with goalkeeper Yann Sommer needing to react sharply to claw away a dangerous deflected header from Kieron Bowie as Inter struggled to find rhythm despite dominating possession.
Cristian Chivu’s side gradually improved as half-time approached, and Henrikh Mkhitaryan came closest to breaking the deadlock after Andy Diouf burst down the left flank and delivered a low cross into the area. However, Verona goalkeeper Lorenzo Montipò stood firm to deny the Armenian at his near post.

Inter eventually found the breakthrough immediately after the restart, though fortune played a major role in the goal. Verona defender Andrias Edmundsson first forced his own goalkeeper into action with an awkward touch before inadvertently diverting the resulting corner into his own net to hand the hosts the lead.
To his credit, Edmundsson responded well to the setback and produced several important defensive moments afterwards, including a block on Mkhitaryan and another intervention to help deny Lautaro Martinez as Inter searched for a second goal.
The latter stages of the game also carried an emotional tone, with Inter supporters bidding farewell to several departing players, including Matteo Darmian and Yann Sommer.
Youngster Mattia Mosconi came close to marking the occasion with his first senior goal, while Petar Sučić was also denied on the line.
Verona, however, produced a late surprise when Bowie punished a lapse in concentration from the Inter defence, cutting onto his left foot before curling an excellent finish into the far corner. The equaliser denied Inter a ninth consecutive home victory over Verona and ensured the champions ended the night with only a point, while Verona took encouragement into life back in Serie B next season.
