Chelsea interim boss Calum McFarlane has defended his players’ effort and commitment despite a damaging 3-1 home defeat to Nottingham Forest that leaves the Blues’ Champions League hopes in serious danger.

Calum McFarlane has leapt to the defence of his Chelsea squad after Monday’s bruising 3-1 defeat to Nottingham Forest, insisting questions should not be raised about the players’ desire despite another lifeless display at Stamford Bridge.

The Blues were stunned early and never truly recovered. Taiwo Awoniyi struck inside the opening stages to put Forest in front, Igor Jesus doubled the visitors’ lead from the penalty spot, and by the time Awoniyi added his second after the interval, Chelsea were staring at another humiliating league defeat.

Joao Pedro’s spectacular late bicycle kick briefly gave the home fans something to cheer, but it did little to mask the scale of Chelsea’s problems as the London club slumped to a sixth consecutive Premier League loss, their worst run in the competition since 1993.

The result leaves Chelsea marooned in ninth place and with their Champions League ambitions now hanging by the thinnest of threads. With only three matches remaining, the margin for error has vanished, and the pressure around the club continues to intensify.

McFarlane did not hide his frustration with the performance, particularly the disastrous opening 15 minutes, which he admitted set the tone for the evening. He pointed to Cole Palmer’s missed penalty and Enzo Fernandez hitting the post as moments that could have changed the momentum, but conceded that Chelsea never managed to reach the standards expected.

Still, the interim manager was quick to reject any suggestion that the players are no longer fighting for the badge. McFarlane insisted he sees commitment from the squad every day in training and believes the issue is execution rather than attitude.

Chelsea’s miserable night was made worse by the worrying injury suffered by teenage winger Jesse Derry, who was stretchered off after a nasty head collision while winning the penalty Palmer later failed to convert. McFarlane offered encouraging signs afterward, confirming the youngster was in good condition pending full medical checks.

With an FA Cup final against Manchester City looming and league form collapsing at exactly the wrong time, McFarlane now faces the difficult task of lifting confidence quickly.
