Chelsea youngster Jesse Derry was taken to hospital for precautionary checks after suffering a worrying head injury during his full Premier League debut in Monday’s 3-1 defeat to Nottingham Forest.
Chelsea’s 3-1 defeat to Nottingham Forest on Monday night was overshadowed by a concerning injury to teenage forward Jesse Derry, who was taken to hospital as a precaution after a nasty collision during his Premier League debut.
The 18-year-old, handed his first top-flight start by caretaker manager Callum McFarlane, was involved in a heavy clash of heads with Forest defender Zach Abbott inside the penalty area just before half-time, bringing play to a halt for several tense minutes.

Medical staff rushed onto the field immediately, with Derry receiving oxygen treatment on the turf before eventually being stretchered off to warm applause from supporters inside Stamford Bridge. Chelsea later confirmed that the youngster was conscious, responsive and undergoing routine precautionary checks at the hospital.
It was a heartbreaking end to what had begun as a memorable evening for one of the club’s brightest academy talents. Derry had looked lively in the opening period, offering pace, directness and a willingness to attack defenders in what was his first senior league appearance.
Speaking after the match, McFarlane admitted the mood in the dressing room had been affected by the incident but offered encouraging words on the player’s condition. The interim boss said all early signs were positive and expressed disappointment that such a significant personal milestone had ended in such unfortunate circumstances.

The collision also led to Chelsea being awarded a penalty after VAR review, but there was further frustration for the Blues when Cole Palmer saw his spot-kick brilliantly saved by Nottingham Forest goalkeeper Matz Sels. Derry was replaced by Liam Delap, who entered under the concussion substitution protocol.
Son of former Leeds United and Crystal Palace midfielder Shaun Derry, Jesse has enjoyed a prolific academy campaign with 12 goals in 29 matches since joining Chelsea from Palace last summer. Monday’s painful setback was not the senior debut he imagined, but the positive medical update will come as the biggest relief for club, teammates and supporters alike.
