The Bundesliga leaders need just an away victory to take the tie to penalties, but a two-goal margin or more would see them progress directly to semifinals.
Bayern Munich have made their intentions loud and clear to Inter. They are coming to the San Siro, and they are coming to win.
“We believe we can come from behind,” said Harry Kane at Tuesday’s press conference ahead of the tie. “We just need the right mentality and need to be more clinical with the chances we get.”
Both teams are in first place in their respective leagues, and Wednesday night promises another thrilling, high-quality encounter. Inter won 2-1 in the first leg at the Allianz Arena last week, after David Frattesi scored a winner despite Thomas Muller’s late equaliser.
Inter are unbeaten in 12 games in all competitions, and the side’s defensive discipline has been praised by pundits. They come into the fixture with a win after beating 15th-placed Cagliari 3-1 at home on Saturday.
In the Bayern camp, a host of first-team players are still missing, including goalkeeper Manuel Neuer, defenders Alphonso Davies, Dayot Upamecano and Hiroki Ito, and midfielder Jamal Musiala. They come into the fixture having been held to a draw by rivals Borussia Dortmund last weekend.
What Bayern coach Vincent Kompany has said
“There’s an anticipation for this match,” said Kompany. “It feels proper. It doesn’t get much better. The most important thing is that we deliver our best performance.
“Sometimes [Champions League nights] are special nights. They’re nights that can be decided by one moment. Hopefully we have the chances again like in the first leg – maybe there won’t be as many.
“We have to be there in the key moments, defend well and score the goals up front.
“The belief is there, at the end of the day we just need to win one match. We always play to win. Hopefully we can experience a very special night, also for our fans.”
What Harry Kane has said
“Inter are a very good team, both offensively and defensively. They caused us problems on the counter especially. You play against the best teams in Europe in the quarter-finals of the Champions League. We expect another tough game.
“I’ve played in a lot of quarter-finals in different competitions and always tried to lead by example and be a role model. There’s a lot of experience in the team and we want to show what we can do in these games. We need the right mentality.
“I expect us to have enough motivation. We believe we can come from behind. We had enough chances to make it a better scoreline in the first leg.
“We have to try to play our game and play even better than in the first leg, especially in terms of chance conversion.”
