Nick Woltemade says criticism of his performances at Newcastle United bothers him as he defends role change.

Nick Woltemade has addressed criticism of his recent performances for Newcastle United, insisting he is not experiencing a dip in form. The German forward admitted the comments have affected him but argued they fail to reflect his current role within the team.

Speaking about the scrutiny, Woltemade said the criticism bothers him, particularly suggestions that he is in a slump. He maintained that such views overlook the tactical adjustments that have altered how he contributes on the pitch.

The 24-year-old explained that he has been deployed in a deeper position in recent matches, which has naturally reduced his opportunities in front of goal. He emphasised that comparing his current goal tally to that of an out-and-out striker does not accurately reflect his performances.

Woltemade noted that he is now operating far from the opposition’s penalty area, focusing more on duels, link-up play and creating space. He added that his responsibilities have changed significantly compared to the start of the season.

Although the former VfB Stuttgart forward acknowledged he prefers playing further forward, he insisted he is comfortable adapting. He believes developing different aspects of his game will benefit him in the long run.

The striker also stressed that he remains relaxed about his goal output, viewing this period as part of his development. He said learning to handle phases where scoring is not the primary measure of performance will make him a more complete player.

Despite the criticism, Woltemade has still contributed 10 goals and five assists in 45 appearances for Newcastle this season. His overall impact, he suggested, should be judged on his broader influence rather than solely on his finishing numbers.
