At some point Barcelona were going to remind Newcastle they were playing in Europe, at one of the grandest venues in the game. So bold, so daring had the Magpies got after replying each of Barcelona’s two early goals with one of their own.

Eddie Howe had said his side would not “shrink” at the Camp Nou and he was half right. Newcastle pressed and fought and ran and attacked. But then somewhere in the middle of the contest they pushed too far and their elite hosts, European royalty on this grandest of stages, punished them ruthlessly.

Somehow there appeared to have been a tacit agreement between Howe and Hansi Flick for no holds barred in this match. From the outset both sides ran at each other, a primal scream missing somewhere. Dan Burn swivelled in the Catalans’ box and took a shot but it lacked direction, and Joan Garcia made easy work of it.

If Newcastle had asked the first questions, Barcelona drew first blood. With only six minutes played Lamine Yamal spun away from Malik Thiaw in the centre circle and sat the defender down. His pass forward found Raphinha, who exchanged passes with Fermin Lopez as a covering Lewis Hall slipped and fell in anxiety. Raphinha had all the time in the world to slot into the bottom left corner.

The Magpies hit back. Hall, identifying space where Eric Garcia had wandered into no-man’s land, burst forward from deep and fed Harvey Barnes. The return pass was perfect, and when Hall’s cutback found Anthony Elanga arriving unmarked, the Sweden winger finished coolly.

There would have been very few people who saw the opening exchanges who would not recognise that the game would be a goalfest. Yamal soon drew a free kick for Barcelona that Gerard Martin nodded down for Marc Bernal to stab home from five yards. Barcelona led again but not for long. Both defences were full of holes. Hall and Barnes combined again to release Elanga, who swept home his second of the night and matters were level once more.

Elanga wanted a penalty for a tug on the shoulder by Joao Cancelo but it was soft and a laissez-faire referee François Letexier was uninterested. Kieran Trippier took it too far. After Yamal had run onto a loose ball in front of the six-yard box and fired towards the moon, he next played a side-foot pass that sent Lopez into space. The latter squared for Raphinha to finish but there was Trippier, pulling the Brazilian’s arm.

Letexier, true to his act, did not initially award it but after VAR called him over it was impossible to ignore. A merciful yellow card for Trippier was followed by Yamal converting from the spot to ensure Barcelona led at the break.

Newcastle were emboldened by their first-half exploits and they pushed recklessly, at some point with up to seven visiting players pushing relentlessly towards Barcelona’s last third to choke the midfield and win the ball.

Such daring always has consequences and they soon suffered it. Six minutes after the restart, Raphinha collected possession and played a quick, first-time pass on the turn that sent Lopez racing clear. The insouciant midfielder slotted home.

More followed. Raphinha’s corner was met by Lewandowski to make it 5-2 and then shortly after Yamal, dancing away from Burn, played the pass into the Poland international: 6-2.

Newcastle had been broken in less than 20 minutes into the second half. There was nothing left to play for; only the motions remained. But before Barcelona finally took the foot of the pedal there was still time for one more. Jacob Ramsey’s misplaced pass was seized on by Raphinha, the Brazilian clinically burying the ball in the net to heap more misery on the Toon.
