Manchester City 1-2 Real Madrid (agg 1-5): Haaland 41; Vinicius 22 pen, 90+3

It is impossible to tell what could have happened had Manchester City retained 11 men on the pitch. Perhaps they could have fought back from a three-goal deficit, perhaps not. The tie was effectively ended after Bernardo Silva was dismissed for an ill-advised handball on minute 20 and Vinicius Junior converted the resulting penalty.

Kudos to City for fighting on but perhaps if resignation were possible they would have taken the option being four goals down and 10 men. Some miracles are just not possible. But forced to continue labouring for seventy minutes before their fans City made a decent account of themselves.

The hosts had begun with purpose, Erling Haaland and Rodri forcing sharp saves from Thibaut Courtois in an opening salvo that suggested a famous comeback was not off the table. Federico Valverde had earlier spurned a glorious chance for Madrid inside sixty seconds, firing wide when clean through.

Next was Vinicius, at the nerve-centre of Madrid’s attack and firing a shot towards goal only for Silva to stick out an arm and deflect it out for a corner. The City captain had his hands clasped behind his back but had clearly stuck out an elbow. There was almost a saving grace as Vinicius looked like he had been offside in the build-up, but once that wasn’t the case out came the card and then the penalty call.

Haaland bundled home just before half-time in a six-yard box scramble after Jeremy Doku sent the ball into the mixer, but surely not even the most optimistic fan could expect three further goals.

Omar Marmoush and Antoine Semenyo were swapped for Haaland and Matheus Nunes as Guardiola shuffled his cards and freshened up weary legs. At one point Doku ran through and finished with a bang but he had been played offside by Madrid’s defence.

Madrid were expectedly content to play gently and absorb pressure. They didn’t need to do much in a game already half won. Kylian Mbappe was introduced with 20 minutes left and the Frenchman immediately caressed a loose ball goalwards after Trent Alexander-Arnold’s corner. It went just wide. In the final act Vinicius netted his second of the night to twist the knife in an already painful wound.
