Midfielder says team’s inconsistency in the final third has been a huge source of frustration
Manchester City midfielder Rodri has refused to rule out the possibility of leaving the club in the summer, with Real Madrid one of his potential suitors.
The Spain international has been repeatedly mentioned as a key target for Madrid as they plan for a rebuild of their midfield. Having previously played in the Spanish capital for Atletico Madrid, Rodri is seen in Spain as a natural fit to anchor the club’s next generation.
“No, no. I’m not going to answer that,” Rodri told Cadena Ser when asked about his future at City. “It’s a time to think about what we have now, with my team, about my season, which is quite a lot, and then we’ll see.”
Rodri was at the heart of the dominance of Pep Guardiola’s best Manchester City sides but the 55-year-old’s team has been showing signs of decline for nearly two years. The 1-1 draw with West Ham in their latest Premier League game again brought to light their issues in attack, where they have struggled to create big chances and score goals at their previous level.
City’s midfielder admitted the team’s inconsistency in the final third has been a huge source of frustration for him throughout this season.
“Yes, a little frustrated, but that’s pretty much the theme this season,” Rodri said. “We’re struggling in that final third. The ‘last third’, as they say here in England. That quality to score the final goal. Perhaps it’s costing us a lot, but in football, the most important thing is putting the ball in the net.”
