Club are preparing a rebuild to revive their fortunes on the pitch
Real Madrid are preparing for big changes in the summer and could potentially get rid of up to seven players in their first-team squad.
The 2025-26 season has been far from a raging success. Throw in Madrid’s poor performance which culminated in a trophyless end to last season and it becomes really obvious why the club would be considering a squad rebuild.
Madrid currently trail Barcelona by four points with 10 games left to play in La Liga. They also lost to their rivals in the Spanish Super Cup for the second year running, and followed that up with a shock exit from the Copa del Rey at the hands of struggling second-division side Albacete.
According to reports in BILD and Marca, Madrid are now preparing a sweeping squad shakeup aimed at addressing weak areas and reducing the average age of the team.
The first phase of the expected clear-out will likely focus on the club’s defensive unit. David Alaba, whose time in Madrid has been disrupted by injuries, is reportedly set to depart when his contract expires this summer. At 33, the Austrian international is unlikely to be offered a renewal.
There is also some uncertainty around Antonio Rudiger and captain Dani Carvajal, both of whom are approaching the final stages of their current contracts. Rudiger has only played 11 La Liga games this season and the lack of news regarding contract talks suggests Madrid could be ready to move in a different direction.
In midfield, the inclusion of Eduardo Camavinga among players who could be sold raises eyebrows. The French international is only 23 and was signed to be a part of Madrid’s midfield in the long term, but inconsistency and injuries means he has not reached expected levels and Madrid could listen to offers. Ferland Mendy and Fran Garcia are also believed to be available for transfer.
